O.T. Thesis: Part 9

(N) The Salt covenant was made by God with Israel concerning the sacrifices they were to offer forever. Believer's are referred to by Jesus in the N.T, as "salt of the earth". 80 Salt was used in Palestine and surounding countries in making covenants, and if persons ate food with salt in it, they became friends though they may have become friends though they may have been enemies before. The Arab expression is "There is salt between us", or He has eaten of my salt," which means partaking of the hospitality which cements friendship." 81 Covenants were generally confirmed at sacrificial meals, and salt was always present. The covenant of salt pictured the everlasting friendship between God and His people.82

(0) The last covenant mentioned in the old testament is what Bible scholars refer to as "The Davidic Covenant". This was an agreement made by God with David and his house through Nathan the prophet, and was conditioned upon obedience as all other covenants. 83 It was an everlasting covenant consisting of a Davidic house forever;84a Davidic throne and kingdom forever.85 A sure land for Israel with no more affliction from the nations was promised by God forever. God promised His fatherly care and eternal covenant forever.87God dealt with many men though the various covenants mentioned above which should now be briefly touched upon.

The most important point in summarizing all of the covenants is to point our the fact that all of the covenants were based on the initiative of God, and that He acted in mercy and with sovereignty. He made an unconditional promise never again to judge mankind with another flood 88 He chose Abraham and his descendants to be the channels of this mercy to a fallen world and He cemented this special choosing of individuals and people by committing this special choosing of individuals and people by committing Himself to the Israelite nation with the words, "I will take you for my people, and I will be your God." 89
